In the seventh grade we study catapults because they were important weapons to the Roman army. The Roman empire could not have lasted as long as it did (800 years) without the development of The Ballista, Mangonel, and Trebuchet by the Roman engineers. To gain a hands-on understanding of the way a catapult works my students spend time in the computer lab researching the internet for a blueprint of a catapult. They then buy the materials and create a functioning catapult usually with the help of a parent (which I encourage). They submit a written report on the day the project is due and demonstrate itıs use in front of other students. The results this year were fabulous!
